Many women feel down, anxious, or easily angered just before their period. This can be related to changes in hormone levels. Some women are more sensitive to these hormonal fluctuations. They experience such severe symptoms that we refer to premenstrual syndrome or depression. We do not fully understand why these symptoms can sometimes be so severe. That is why the RHYTHM project is investigating how hormones influence emotions at different stages of life.
This is a collaboration of Amsterdam UMC (Birit Broekman) and Erasmus MC (Pauline Jansen).
