This research aims to evaluate the effectiveness of the “Act and Feel” online behavioral activation intervention in addressing depression in Rwanda, and its impact on child development. In Africa, mental health conditions are on rise with depression alone affecting 100 million people, and suicide death rates of 11 deaths per 100,000 people, which is higher than the global average of 9 per 100,000 (World Bank, 2021). While the need is high, many African countries, including Rwanda, have allocated less than 1% of their budget to mental health services; and only 3% of clinical trials in LMIC, focus on mental health (Sankoh et al., 2018). The impact of mental health conditions affects not only the individual person, but also their children’s development, and the country’s economic growth (Ridley et al., 2020). My project will assess the effectiveness of the digital intervention “Act and Feel”, previously proven effective in Indonesia, in the context of Rwanda, a country with limited mental health services. The project will be conducted in five phases: 1) a systematic review to examine the effect of prenatal psychological interventions on offspring outcomes, 2) a prevalence study of depression and acceptability of digital interventions among Rwandans, 3) adaptation of the “Act and Feel” intervention to the Rwandan context, 4) training of Community Health Workers (CHWs) to guide the intervention, and 5) a randomized controlled trial to assess the effectiveness of the intervention.
