Background: Cumulative evidence points towards a shared disease mechanism underlying schizophrenia spectrum and bipolar disorders (SSD/BD): a dysfunction in energy homeostasis in the brain. Small recent studies suggest the Ketogenic Diet is effective in treating core SSD/BD symptoms.
Objective: The current pilot study intends to establish the effect of a single dose of dGK on relevant neuro-electrophysiological (primary outcome: Electro-Encephalogram (EEG)-recorded Event Related Potential (ERP) Pre-Pulse Inhibition (PPI)), as well as on the ERP P300, cognitive, metabolic, inflammatory, and patient-experience outcome measures (secondary).
Study design: Aggregated n=1 design: Randomised, double-blind controlled 2-way cross-over study.
Study population:
Patients partially remitted from a first psychotic episode (FEP) or from a mood episode (BD) receiving standard clinical care at Amsterdam UMC, dept. psychiatry; age >=18 years old.
