Research themes

The ‘Trauma’ project aims to investigate the prevalence of traumatic events and PTSD among children and adolescents receiving care at the DREAMS centers, a research consortium consisting of four academic child and adolescent psychiatry institutions: Accare (UMCG), LUMC Curium, Karakter (Radboudumc) en Levvel (Amsterdam UMC).

Another key focus of this project is the significant variation in the time between the onset of PTSD symptoms and treatment, with some individuals not receiving any treatment at all. The project will explore the pathways followed by trauma-exposed Dutch adolescents from symptom onset to treatment, shedding light on the factors influencing this process.

Additionally, this project seeks to examine whether the children and adolescents themselves face any obstacles in accessing or receiving appropriate PTSD diagnosis and treatment, and if so, to identify what these barriers are.

Finally, the project will explore the concept of resilience in these trauma-exposed young people, particularly in those treated at the DREAMS centers, to better understand how resilience can support recovery and inform treatment approaches.
