Lithium is one of the most effective treatment options for mood stabilisation in patients with mood disorders and is the cornerstone in treatment of patients with bipolar disorder. In general, lithium is well tolerated and many patients use lithium for a prolonged period of time to their satisfaction. However, some experience side-effects, of which renal complications are often the most frightening for patients. This can lead to hesitation towards starting lithium therapy and stop of lithium therapy despite the effect on disease stability.
This multi-center prospective cohort study was established in 2012 and follows bipolar patients on lithium therapy. Aim of the study is to evaluate the prevalence, course and severity of lithium induced kidney disease. Information on maximal urine concentrating capacity and glomerular filtration rates are being collected over time. In this study, Amsterdam UMC and GGZ inGeest collaborate with Radboudumc, Jeroen Bosch Ziekenhuis and CWZ.
