This observational study examines the impact of cross-hormone therapy on sleep, mood, and their relationship in both transmen and transwomen.
Recruitment:
The study involves 90 transmen and 90 transwomen from the Amsterdam UMC and UMCG transgender patient group. Eligible participants are healthy transgender individuals without significant psychiatric disorders or on medication for sleep.
Participants are approached during the diagnostic phase before starting Gender Affirming Hormone Therapy (GAHT).
Study follow-up:
Participants undergo three sessions of non-invasive sleep measurements (7 consecutive nights each) with a single electrode EEG and sleep diaries and investigation of mood symptoms: one before and two within a year after starting hormone therapy.
Outcome Measures:
• Primary: Changes in sleep duration and sleep stages
• Secondary: Subjective sleep quality, mood changes, and their relationship during hormone therapy.
