Developmental difficulties in children rarely have a single origin. They arise in the interaction between health, upbringing, education, living environment and information exchange. Yet care and support systems are still largely organised along separate lines and silo’s. With the best intentions, but often at the cost of losing the very coherence that development requires.
At N=You, the Neurodevelopmental Precision Center of Amsterdam UMC, we have consciously explored a different path over recent years. Through approaches such as Donutpsychiatrie, the triageboxx and the Digitale Voordeur, we began working from a simple but fundamental principle: not starting from diagnoses, but from health, capacity and developmental space. By making this coherence visible and workable, one insight became increasingly clear.
Anyone who truly wants to understand development and support children sustainably needs an ecological approach to care.

Ecological approach to care
From this perspective, health is not a fixed state, but a dynamic capacity that strengthens or erodes depending on conditions. Vulnerability is not a label, but a signal. Movement, nutrition, sleep, rest, living conditions, relationships and the information environment together determine whether health can sustain development , or gradually drains away through fatigue, dysregulation and stagnation.
Ecological care therefore restores overview and agency to where they belong: with children and families, in connection with their environment. It integrates medical, social and informational perspectives, while also reconnecting development with nature, rhythm and recovery.
Ecological care for development
From this moment on, N=You explicitly positions itself as ecological care for development. Not as a fixed model, but as a learning and collaborative approach , developed together with care partners, researchers, education and societal initiatives.
Through our N=You LinkedIn page, we will share how this movement continues to evolve in care, research and collaboration. Follow us and join the conversation.
N=You is the Neurodevelopmental Precision Center of Amsterdam UMC. The center combines highly specialised diagnostics—such as clinical assessment, EEG and genetic expertise—with a deep understanding of developmental context. This allows care to move beyond standard diagnostic labels, tailoring support to the individual developmental profile of each child and its caregivers.
