Embodied Cognition Research Group

The Embodied Cognition Research Group was founded when Erik’s research project on skilled action titled “The Landscape of Affordances: Situating the Embodied Mind” was awarded with a NWO VIDI-grant for the development of his research on skilled intentionality & situated expertise. Part of this was research on the clinical expertise and skilled intentionality of psychiatrists optimizing Deep Brain Stimulation for OCD-patients. Rietveld then received an ERC Starting Grant for a new philosophical project titled “Skilled Intentionality for ‘Higher’ Embodied Cognition: Joining Forces with a Field of Affordances in Flux”. This included research on “The End of Sitting”, or what Wired called the weirdest proposal for the office of the future. Most recently, Rietveld was awarded a VICI grant by NWO for a large five-year philosophical research project on collective behavioral change & artistic imagination. The project is titled: “Change-Ability for a World in Flux: The next step for an embodied cognitive science of brain-body-environment systems”.
