This study aims to develop and pilot test an online education module for people with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND).
The education module will be developed on the online platform MindDistrict. It will contain information about FND, including predisposing, precipitating and sustaining factors according to the biopsychosocial model. Study participants will be able to develop a personal formulation by indicating which of these factors apply to them. Finally, they will receive information about treatment options.
The module is hypothesized to increase understanding and acceptance of diagnosis, and give patients the information needed to decide which treatment they would like to receive for their disorder.
The pilot test is a mixed methods study. We will recruit 30 patients who have just received the diagnosis of FND. The study starts with a baseline assessment, including questionnaires on understanding and acceptance of the diagnosis, subjective symptom severity, daily functioning, health-related quality of life and symptoms of anxiety and depression. Participants then can access the online module. After one and two months, the baseline assessment will be repeated and data on subjective experience of the module will be collected with questionnaires as well as in focus group interviews.
