Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a severe psychiatric disorder characterised by emotion dysregulation, resulting in symptoms of affective instability and (para)suicidal behaviour. From a neuroscience perspective, sleep is increasingly recognised to play an essential in emotion regulation and emotional memory.
BPD patients often experience severe sleep disturbances. In this project, sponsored by a Hersenstichting grant, we test the effectiveness of a blended form of cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) as add-on intervention to standard BPD treatment in patients suffering from BPD and sleep complaints.
The study closely collaborates with the ‘Slapend angst verlichten’ study (van Oppen, Batelaan, van Someren) within the Better nights, better days consortium.
