Kathleen Thomaes is psychiatrist and senior researcher at the Sinai Center and the department of Psychiatry of Amsterdam UMC.
Her clinical work focuses on optimizing treatment of trauma-related disorders, including posttraumatic stress disorders. Since 2017 she set up the Academic Collaborative Center Trauma & PTSD and since 2018 she builded a new intensive treatment program for veterans, the VIBU (see https://www.sinaicentrum.nl/behandeling/veteranen/veteranen-intensieve-behandel-unit/ ). Thomaes’ specific focus is on child abuse, and more currently also on war-related trauma. Her research themes are – the prediction of – treatment outcomes in trauma-related disorders and comorbid (personality) disorders, the underlying mechanisms behind emotion regulation and treatment effects, and extends to associated themes in trauma-focused treatment such as parenting, sexual problems and sleep. A new research line will focus on the mechanisms behind the intergenerational transmission of trauma and treatment of psychological consequences of emotional trauma.
