The Department of Psychiatry of Amsterdam UMC focuses on high-quality diagnosis and treatment of psychiatric disorders, including anxiety, compulsive disorders, depression, eating disorders and psychosis. We offer compassionate, academic care in the dynamics of each phase of people’s lives and integral care for people with physical and mental complaints. We offer (highly) specialized care, and in addition to hospital psychiatry, we have an outpatient clinic, and an inpatient clinic. We share our expertise with other specialties inside and outside the hospital. We strive for maximum added value of prevention and improvement of (mental) health in our society.

Our department focuses on the care of patients with complex and difficult-to-treat psychiatric problems. We develop new treatments and conduct scientific research, which covers the full spectrum of psychiatric research.  It is characterized by a broad interdisciplinary and translational approach, ranging from basic animal research to clinical studies and prevention studies. The research methods are therefore highly diverse, including qualitative or technological research on small patient groups as well as large-scale epidemiological and genetic studies.

We have a strong tradition in collaborating with our mental health partners in the Amsterdam region, somatic departments and mental health departments in Amsterdam UMC. Additionally we collaborate continuously with hospitals in Amsterdam and in the region, and are linked to national and international research institutes in various research projects.
